What once started out as a summer home for relaxing and enjoying the summer breeze turned into a hectic and cramped entertaining hot spot. With many family and friends who visit at all times of the year, this kitchen was sadly lacking functional space. Sun, sand, fine wine and food are top priorities for this family that has multiple cooks that like to play together in the kitchen.

The original kitchen, a large closet size space, was transformed into what is now dubbed “party central’ with room to spare for lounging or just being part of the occasion. By removing a wall that separated the kitchen from the eating area, the possibilities became many making the kitchen the hub of this home. Much thought went into every selection so that function and comfort worked nicely with color and design. The outcome was nothing less than sensational.

This Colonial-style house was constructed many years ago with many small rooms. With the homeowner’s love of food and entertaining, she wanted a space that would allow her to be with family and friends while cooking. Encore’s architectural designer repurposed the space by removing a wall, relocating a half bath and adding a small addition all to make a huge difference…an open space kitchen with adjoining sitting area and mudroom along with access to a new deck. Cabinetry, flooring, countertops and tile, appliances and lighting fixtures were all replaced giving the new space a contemporary look yet comfortable feel. From the exterior, the addition blended so naturally into the existing structure that it looked like it had been there from the day the house was initially built.

With a lifestyle change, a kitchen remodel was long overdue for these homeowners. Encore’s kitchen designer and selections specialist created an elegant space – utilizing painted cabinetry with traditional mouldings, marble countertops, modern appliances and a neutral color palette – turning this dark and dingy cookery into a light and airy gourmet kitchen that also showcases the homeowners’ eclectic travel treasures.

They always say that once your kids are grown and have moved away, you have the house to yourself. Not true for this Wellesley-based family with three daughters who enjoy summer on Cape Cod. The homeowners’ desire was to remain true to the old sea captains’ period style home, whose roots began on Nantucket, while seamlessly marrying the past with the present. The kitchen was transformed into the hub of the house by eliminating one of the entries, a wall and claiming three feet of space from the dining room. Three workstations were incorporated for multiple cooks. Wide pine floors and inset custom cabinetry with antique glass kept true to the existing style and appeal of the house. Meticulous planning and precise product selection combined with creative design resulted in a spectacular end result.
