Creating Open Kitchen Spaces Without Adding On
It’s no surprise that a kitchen remodeling project is usually at the top of the list for homeowners who want to transform their living space. Kitchens are the work centers of the home, but they have also become the social centers. Guests gravitate to the kitchen to chat with their host or hostess as food is prepared, many children do their homework in the kitchen, and busy working couples often unwind at the end of the day by cooking together.
Our clients continue to be looking for ways to open up kitchen spaces to make them great for socializing, as well as for food preparation. In recent years, we’ve seen a trend toward maximizing kitchen space without adding on. Bump outs and the removal of interior walls have been great ways to create open, airy kitchens without increasing the footprint of a home.
Other kitchen remodeling trends for 2012 include:
Timeless Cabinetry
Homeowners want styles that last. Simple, classic cabinetry styles such as Shaker are very popular. The National Kitchen and Bath Association is finding that many homeowners are embracing various shades of white or off-white in their cabinetry to give their kitchen a relaxed, comfortable feeling.
Concealed Appliances
Homeowners want the kitchen to be a continuation of the living space, and that means creating a seamless look. Appliances such as refrigerators are being disguised with custom door panels and drawer style dishwashers continue to be popular. Closed appliance “garages” for toasters and other small appliances get the clutter off the counter.
Decorative Lighting
Lighting typically associated with a living room is moving in to the kitchen as it becomes an extension of the living space. Accent lighting, sconces and creative light fixtures are becoming popular.
More variety in counter tops
Natural stone and quartz counter tops are still favorites, but homeowners are increasingly choosing concrete, glass and stainless steel.
Going Green
There are so many environmentally sensitive products that you no longer have to change the look of your kitchen to accommodate eco-friendly selections. While aesthetics and cost are still the main drivers in making kitchen selections, customers are increasingly asking about green options.
